6 Space Saving Secrets for Your Computer

Tech

Someone once said that the clutter on your desk is a state of your mind. There is some truth in this, but regarding your computer, it is more than just a state of mind. An untidy computer, full of desktop clutter and multiples copies of the same documents, not only leads to clutter but has an impact on the performance of your computer – and will cost you time.

Discover what’s eating up space on your computer or Mac and what and take these six simple space saving secrets.

Space Saving Secrets For Those Storage Hogs

Consider taking a step back and looking for the significant wins before you begin eliminating anything at random. Images, music, and movies, among other types of media files, are renowned space hogs. A few 50-MB files here and there won’t make nearly as much of a difference as clearing up an 80-GB folder full of old TV series or deleting a few games from your computer.

What About Bloatware?

Simply out – bloatware is pre-installed on the computer that you don’t ever use and don’t want.

If you discover that your computer is infected with bloatware, it is not the end of the world. Manually locating and removing bloatware is possible.

There is no foolproof technique to avoid bloatware from being installed while downloading an application from the internet. Keep these two principles in mind to save yourself some time and frustration.

First and foremost, be sure that you are downloading a program from an official website or at the very least from a reputable source.

Second, When you start the installation, carefully read the information and don’t just click Agree. Also, read the checkboxes to ensure you only install what you need. Sometimes the boxes are automatically checked, and the computer downloads unnecessary files.

Who Needs Duplicates?

Over time we all make copies of files. Deleting duplicate files on your system could result in a massive clean-up if only a few huge files are identified. Generally speaking, this is not easy to manage without tools or some advanced knowledge. In most cases, photos and video media are the most significant space hogs. Take the steps here to get on top of the challenge.

Look To The Cloud

We all have files we want to get rid of and want ready access to. You don’t need to retain these files on your laptop’s hard drive; instead, save them on an external drive or transfer them to cloud storage of your choice.

Clear The Cache

Cache are temporary files such as thumbnails, historical patch info, and cached internet files, which you can delete to free up space. But, these files will eventually reappear because that is how operating systems and internet browsers work. So, while this may temporarily free up some space, it is not a long-term solution.

Take Out The Trash

When you delete a file, it is moved to the Recycle Bin. This is an excellent precautionary measure because if you make a mistake and accidentally delete a file that you now want back, you can quickly restore the file from the Recycle Bin.

The files in the Recycle Bin, on the other hand, continue to take up space on your computer. You can select these files and right-click to delete them or click ‘Empty the Recycle Bin’ to delete all files permanently.

Stay On Top of Computer Space

Hopefully, this list of space saving secrets will be of assistance in freeing up some disk space, but it is by no means comprehensive.
