Types of Cybercrimes: What You Need to Know

Tech

Cybercrime has significantly grown over the last couple of years in the technological world. Hackers from all over the world are causing havoc to users’ personal and valuable data and highly accomplished businesses worldwide. Once the information is in their possession, they sell it to buyers who are willing to pay the right price for it.

As a result, many businesses lose millions of dollars annually and what is even more frightening is the fact that these numbers continue to grow even more over the years. The increasing accessibility of smart tech has led to vast opportunities for cybercriminals to exploit us in ways we could not have imagined.

Despite things looking bleak, there are some leading people in the IT business world who are working towards bringing about a solution to this dilemma. Charles Iheagwara is a revered American IT management executive, technology researcher, inventor, and entrepreneur who has been putting in relentless efforts into finding the best solutions to tackle cybercrime all over the world.

He is the Principal Program Manager at Microsoft and works with a team of experts who make a combined effort to secure the Azure cloud platform and protect customers’ assets on the cloud. He has also been known for his vast scientific knowledge and holds an esteemed position of an inventor and technology researcher with a United States patent in Information Technology Enterprise Intrusion Prevention Implementation Tool. In fact, he has more than 40 publications out of which some have been cited by the ACM Digital Library and ResearchGate.

Following an invited testimony, Iheagwara testified before the Senate Committee on Small Businesses and Entrepreneurship on The Role of Small Businesses in Strengthening Cyber Security Efforts in the US. Additionally, he also led the panel discussion hosted by the Kogod School of Business on the campus of American University on how business and government should approach corporate cybersecurity.

As a professional, Iheagwara has always stated that people should be wary about certain types of cybercrime so that they know when they are being targeted by hackers and how to keep their information safe in such situations.

Botnets

Botnets are considered networks that are compromised computers which are being externally controlled by remote hackers. These criminals send attacks or spam other computers via these botnets, which can also be used as malware and cause them to perform malicious actions.

Cyberstalking

This is probably one of the most popularly growing cybercrimes, which involves virtual harassment where the user tends to be subjected to a myriad of emails and online messages. Usually, cyber stalkers would use social media, web pages, and search engines to try and intimidate users to instill fear in them.

Phishing

One of the oldest tricks in the book for hackers which still continues to affect people today. This type of attack usually involves cybercriminals sending hostile email attachments or URLs to various users in order to access their computers or account. And as technology continues to get better, hackers have come up with new ways to ensure that their emails do not become spam. Unfortunately, users fall for it easily and end up giving their vital information to the enemy.

There is still so much information regarding the types of cyber-attacks – but once you can learn about all of them, you become efficient in securing your personal space and protecting your information from those who wish to exploit it.
